If you run your own small business, it is incredibly important that you keep yourself in good health. Your health affects how you perform at work, so if your health suffers, so will your business.

The Beauty of North Carolina

I had no idea that Durham, North Carolina was such a nice and well-known place. Oh sure, I’d seen the movie, Bull Durham, with Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon. But nothing in that movie seemed to make the place famous to me—as a matter of fact, just the opposite. It seemed like a dusty little small town where nobody wanted to be.

But when I stayed at the Comfort Inn Medical Park Hotel, purely on business, I found out what I’d been missing. I got the room through a hotel deal, and I’m sure glad I did. Firstly, I was surprised to find out that the Durham Bulls are a real baseball team. They are a minor league baseball team for the Chicago Cubs, and they’re quite popular nationwide. Then, Durham is relatively close to Raleigh, which is a renowned historical and financial center. And of course, I was there because the area has become very important to the business world, too.

I’d never visited North Carolina before, but it is a very beautiful state. I’ve always imagined what the beauty of the South must be like, and I was not disappointed! It makes me want to go back and visit more of the Deep South.

The SAFE Mortgage Licensing Act

In 2008, President Bush signed a mortgage-related law that includes something called the S.A.F.E. Mortgage Licensing Act. The purpose of this act was to create a national standard for the minimum requirements necessary to get trained in mortgages. This helps to guarantee that all mortgage professionals are trained properly.

Some of the requirements outlined by this Safe Mortgage Licensing Act include:

• Loan originators must have at least twenty hours of training before they can get licensed to do their jobs.
• Eight of these twenty hours must be in specific topics assigned by the act. The other twelve hours must be completed but there are a variety of different topics to choose from for those twelve hours.
• Loan originators must also have at least eight hours of additional training every year. This is continuing education training which keeps them on top of the game as far as their work in the mortgage industry goes.

This standard is a national minimum standard. What this means is that each state can set forth additional requirements but that no state can have fewer than these requirements. This is good because it means that there is some level of guarantee that mortgage professionals across the nation will be properly trained but it leaves the rest of the regulation up to the states.
